Menen is a commune of 32,000 on the banks of the Leie River, at the French border. The Menin Road, site of the Menin Gate memorial, terminates at Menen. Menen changed hands frequently during World War I. The E17 roadway crosses into France after passing through Menen's southeastern tip.
