Merchtem, a commune of 14,000, is located northwest of
Brussels.
Brussegem and Hamme are boroughs within the municipal district of Merchtem. (There are two other towns called Hamme in Belgium: one in Oost-Vlaanderen province, and one in Beauvechain, Brabant Wallon province.)
