Merelbeke is a commune of 22,000 due south of Gent. The "Flora" area of Merelbeke, in the north, so named because of the bustling flower trade centered there, is more densely populated than the southern portion of this long, sprawling town. Merelbeke had been plagued by floods for centuries, but the establishment of a lock canal system in 1962 put a stop to them. The Scheldt River forms Merelbekes western border. Bottelare, Lemberge, Melsen, Munte, and Schelderode are boroughs within the municipal district of Merelbeke.
