Meulebeke is a commune of 11,000, located 35 kilometers south of
Brugge and 40 kilometers west of
Gent. Karel Van Mandere, author of the first known art history text, "Schilderboek" or "Painter's book", was born in Meulebeke. There is a small peace museum in an old railstation containing artifacts from the two World Wars.
