The Meyboom is a folk tradition upheld by the Confrrie des Compagnons de Saint-Laurent, or the Brotherhood of the Companions of St. Lawrence. It is a procession through the streets, complete with brass band, giant puppets, and limitless tomfoolery.
The procession must conclude with the planting of a Meyboom shrubbery at a particular location within 17 hours of the festival's commencement, or a curse descends upon the city of Brussels.
The Festival of the Meyboom is one of Brussels' oldest folk traditions.
