Modave Castle

Also known as the Chateau des Comtes de Marchins, this classical palace is set on a rock in the middle of a 450 acre nature preserve. Most of Modave dates from the 17th century, though small pieces survive from the original 12th century keep. There are excellent views of the Hoyoux Valley from the upper floors. 20 or so rooms are open, some with astonishing decorations -- one standout is the stucco on the ceiling of the Guards Room, featuring a 5 generation family trea with each leaf an emblematic crest.
