Montaigle Castle Ruins

Search Falaen

Guy of Dampierre, Count of Namur and an important historical figure in the Battle of the Golden Spurs, had a fortress constructed at Montaigle over the ruins of a Roman reinforcement at the beginning of the 14th century. It was enlarged and served as a residence in the 15th century. Then, in 1554 it was abandoned as the French troops of Henri II advanced. It was burned down shortly after the residents fled.

Montaigle was never fully restored; it was ressurected piecemeal, with some parts allowed to decay and some parts preserved. It became a picturesque ruin which would inspire and serve as a subject for numerous artists in the 19th and 20th centuries. It has recently been the subject of an agressive restoration campaign by a philanthopic organization, the Friends of Montaigle, who have improved access to the site, and the quality of the visiting experience. Tours are supplemented with placards and video presentations.
