Oost Vlaanderen, or East Flanders, is a flat, agriculturally fertile province, criscrossed by rivers and canals. The largest city is
Gent, which contains approximately a quarter of the province's population of 1 million. At Gent, the
Scheldt River and the
Leie River come together; the
Dender River flows near the eastern end of the province. Northeast of Gent lies the beautiful
Waasland district, whose capital is
Sint-Niklaas.
Though damaged during the World Wars, the devastation in Oost Vlaanderen was not as complete as in its sister province of West-Vlaanderen.
