Ramillies is a rural commune of 5,000, forty kilometers southeast of
Brussels, in the
Hesbaye farming region.
A famous battle in the War of the Spanish Succesion took place in Ramilies May 12-23, 1706. Allied forces commanded by the Duke of Marlborough handed the French under Villeroy a resounding defeat.
Bomal, Hottomont, Geest-Gerompont-Petit-Rosiere, Mont-Saint-Andre, Autre-Eglise, Huppaye, and Ramillies-Offus are all boroughs within the municipal district of Ramillies.
