Stavelot, a commune of 6,000, is located 40 kilometers southeast of the city of
Liege. The monastery at Stavelot was founded in 648 by Saint Remacle, vassal of Sigebert, King of the Franks. The area remained under the abbey's governance from then up until 1795 and the French Revolution. The old abbey still stands, an imposing collection of buildings dating from the 16th through the 18th centuries. The complex houses a startlingly diverse array of museums -- for a single admission fee, you gain access to both a display of religious art and a collection of racing cars and motorcycles from a nearby speedway.
Francorchamps is a borough within the municipal district of Stavelot.
