Tongeren, a commune of 30,000, is located 15 kilometers northeast of the city of Liege, in Limburg province on the border between Flanders and Wallonia. Tongeren is a very old town, having been settled in Roman times on the road to Cologne, now in Germany. The Franks and then the Vikings demolished it in succession during the Dark Ages. Tongeren prospered during the Middle Ages once again, but even today it has not equaled the size of the original Roman camp, as evidence of far-flung first century ramparts shows. The Basilica of Our Lady is a must-see.

's Herenelderen, Berg, Diets-Heur, Elderen, Haren, Henis, Heure-le-Tiexhe, Kolmont, Koninksem, Lauw, Mal, Neerrepen, Nerem, Overrepen, Piringen, Riksingen, Rutten, Sluizen, Sluze, Vreren, and Widooie are boroughs within the municipal district of Tongeren. (There is another Sluizen within the commune of Beauvechain, in Brabant Wallon province.)
