Virton, a commune of 11,000, is the capital of the Gaume
region, in the far south of Belgium. It is a center of administration and education; the population figure includes some 3,000 students. Virton's Gaume Museum, which focuses on local history and archaeology, is well known for its collection of antique forged iron, especially fireplace paraphenalia.
