Vladslo is one of four German military cemetaries in the area of Ypres. It contains row upon row of flat black stones, each inscribed with the names of 10 soldiers. (The terms of the armistice forbid the use of white stone to the vanquished.) Vladslo hosts a remarkable sculpture, The Mourning Parents, by German artist Kathe Kollwitz, whose 19-year-old son was killed during one of the first campaigns of World War I.
