Beckwourth

Beckwourth is a small community named after James Pierson Beckwourth, a black man, who was an early pioneer who developed an alternate trail to reach the Sacramento Valley. Beckwourth's trail branched off the main California Trail at Truckee Meadows, now the site of Sparks and Reno, Nevada and ended near Oroville, California.

Jim Beckwourth was an African American who played a major role in the early exploration and settlement of the American West. Although there were people of many races and nationalities on the frontier, Beckwourth was the only African American who recorded his life story, and his adventures took him from the everglades of Florida to the Pacific Ocean and from southern Canada to northern Mexico.

This small community is located north of Lake Tahoe on Highway 70, west of the Nevada state line.
