Overlooking the city and the harbor at the south end of Cabrillo Memorial Drive on Point Loma, the monument commemorates Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, who explored the West Coast in 1542. The lighthouse, which lighted the way for ships entering San Diego Harbor from 1855 to 1891, has been refurbished.

A coast artillery system that defended the harbor during both world wars is visible from Bayside Drive.
