Silver mining caused Calico to boom in the period from 1881 to 1896. The mines produced more than $13 million dollars before the falling price of silver forced the mines to closed in 1895.
Today the restored town features gunfights and historic tours. Open daily except Christmas. Admission to the town is charged. A tram runs from the parking lot to the town.
