This urban state park features 37 acres of walking and biking trails, scenic vista of
San Francisco Bay, and spots for picnics, bird watching, fishing and windsurfing. The name Candlestick came from the early settlers in the area. When they burned wooden ships off the point, as the flaming vessels sank, the last part going down resembled a candlestick. The park was reclaimed from a landfill that the state set aside $10 million to purchase in 1973. In 1977, the California state legislature voted to develop the land as the first urban recreation area. Now the park activities include informal games, bird watching, fishing, hiking, jogging, and cycling. The park has wind sheltered picnic tables, barbeques and restrooms. There are nature as well as tide pool and mudflat walks available.
The park is located next to 3ComPark (formerly Candlestick Park). Take the 3ComPark exit from Highway 101 in San Francisco.
