This course has a modern design with large oak trees and four lakes. Cherry Island is a challenge to all golfers. Cherry Island, one of the County of Sacramento's three championship golf courses, opened for public play on June 1, 1990. The Par 72 championship layout was listed by Golf Digest in 1991 as one of the Top Ten New Public Courses in the nation. Other facilities at Cherry Island include a natural turf practice range, practice putting greens, golf shop, and the Island Bar & Grill.

Horseracing was part of that first fair and has continued to be a part of the fair ever since.
