The Chew Kee Store was a Chinese rammed earth building established as herb shop during the
The California Gold Rush days. This is the only remnant of the once-thriving
Fiddletown Chinese Community.
It was built about 1850 by the Chinese of Fiddletown for herbal doctor Yee Fan-Chung. The adobe building was constructed using traditional Chinese rammed earth techniques, which involved leveling the site and placing a thin layer of gravel and stones for the foundation.
The store is open Saturdays only, April through October from 12:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. The store is also open by appointment.
The Chew Kee Store is maintained by the Fiddletown Preservation Society.
