This refuge contains 13,000 acres consisting of palm oasis woodlands, perennial desert pools, and blow-sand habitat. This habitat is critical for the Coachella Valley fringe-toed lizard (Uma inornata) and flat-tailed horned lizard . These threatened species are restricted to the refuge dune system and a few other small areas. The area also has the state's second largest grove of native fan palms and the Coachella milk-vetch, a species of special concern. Horseback riding and hiking are limited to specified trails.
