Natural hot springs occur when water seeps deep into the earth and is heated by volcanic forces. The heat increases the pressure and causes the water to rise back to the surface. Sometimes it returns in the form of a geyser, and more often is simply rises as a hot spring.
California has 304 hot springs. It is second only to Nevada for its number of hot springs.
