The University is the product of a merger, in 1869, between the College of California (a private institution) and the Agricultural, Mining, and Mechanical Arts College (a land grant institution). Its curriculum was modeled after that of Yale and Harvard, with the addition of modern languages to the core courses in Latin, Greek, history, English, mathematics, and natural history.
Berkeley's more than 130 academic departments and programs are organized into 14 colleges and schools. Their programs lead to bachelors degrees, post bachelor certificates, masters degrees, post-masters certificates, doctoral degrees, first professional degrees and first professional certificates.
