Columbia College was established in Chicago, Illinois in 1880. It initially specialized in teaching public speaking to "teachers, preachers, lawyers, politicians and other professional orators." With the emergence of the radio broadcasting industry in the 1920s, Columbia College began offering classes in radio techniques -- speaking, writing, directing, sound effects, engineering and production.
