Two impressive "Quick Facts" jump out at one about the University--SDSU is the only one in the 23-campus California State University system to be designated a "Doctoral University II" by the Carnegie Foundation and secondly, SDSU's American Language Institute is the largest university-based English as a Second Language (ESL) learning program in the U.S.
SDSU was founded on March 13, 1897 for the training of elementary school teachers. The seven faculty and ninety-one students of the then Normal School's first class met on November 1, 1898. Today, they are one of the largest universities in the western United States with an enrollment of about 28,000.
The University is located in San Diego County, CA, and has athletic scholarships to offer in football, basketball, baseball, track/cross country and other sports.
