Music has been an essential part of San Francisco since the early Gold Rush Days The City's first opera was performed in 1851 and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music has been centerstage in that demand for excellence since its founding over 80 years ago. Since 1917, the Conservatory has enjoyed a distinguished history of preparing talented young musicians for professional careers in music. With a reputation for excellence and an intimate, friendly atmosphere, the Conservatory provides a truly distinctive education for our students. The Collegiate Division, serving approximately 260 students, offers extensive performance opportunities and instruction with highly regarded faculty members. Children ages 4-18 participate in the Conservatory's Preparatory Division, while lifelong learners attend lessons and classes through the Adult Extension Division.
