When the Southern Pacific Railroad came through the area in 1889, development of the Lindsay townsite began under the Pacific Development Company. Capt. Hutchinson laid out the townsite and the community was named for his wife, Sadie Lindsay Patton Hutchinson.

Visitors of Lindsay will come to find that Lindsay was given the All-American City Award in 1995. Visitors can enjoy the many annual events that the City of Lindsay hosts. These include the Orange Blossom Festival, the Cinco De Mayo Celebrations, the Big Summer Car Show, and the Annual Chili Cook-Off.

Lindsay is located in Tulare County north of Bakersfield between Visalia and Bakersfield along Highway 65 near Lake Success.

There is also a Lindsay, Oklahoma.

Lindsay is part of the Visalia-Tulare-Porterville, California metro area.
