Kaiser Permanente is a nonprofit, group practice prepayment health plan that seeks to improve and maintain the health of its members through high-quality, affordable health care. Kaiser Permanente began as a prepaid industrial health care program during World War II, serving thousands of workers at shipyards in Richmond.

Today, Kaiser Permanente is the largest nonprofit managed care organization in the country, providing service to 8.6 million members in 18 states. Approximately 5.8 million of these members reside in California.
