The Mission San Gabriel Arcangel was established on September 8, 1771, as one of the chain of Spanish Missions. It was the 4th mission in the 21-mission chain in Alta California. It was named for the Archangel Gabriel. Father Antonio Cruzado designed the mission with the front of the mission actually being a sidewall. The entrance to the mission is on the side of the building. The mission bell tower was damaged by an earthquake in 1812 and moved to its present location.The mission is open daily except Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Please call for admission times.
