Mission San Francisco de Asis

One of the oldest buildings in San Francisco, the mission was founded in 1776 by Father Junipero Serra, as one of the Spanish Missions. The rough-hewn redwood roof timbers still are lashed together with rawhide. The altar was one of the most ornate among the missions. The original books and decorations were brought from Spain and Mexico. A small museum displays old manuscripts and mission relics. The basilica next door, in a combination of Moorish, Mission and Corinthian styles, stands in contrast to the mission's appearance.

The mission and museum are open daily except for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
