Miners looking for gold discovered the cavern in 1851. Guided 45-minute tours descend 165 feet, including 100 feet by a spiral staircase into a room big enough to hold the Statue of Liberty. Alternatively, visitors can descend by a 180-foot rappel or take the three-hour Adventure Tour to the farthest depths of the cavern. Reservations are required for the Adventure Tour. Moaning Cavern is open all year long, every day. Summer hours during Daylight Savings Time are 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., winter hours during Pacific Standard Time, are 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. weekdays and 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on the weekends. Moaning Cavern offers family walking tours, wild cavern expedition trips, gemstone mining, a free nature trail and picnic tables set in beautiful countryside.
