Built in 1965 as the larger half of a stadium and arena complex, the Coliseum made its baseball debut in 1968 when Charlie Finley's Athletics moved in from Kansas City, becoming the first American League team to occupy three different cities in a 15-season span. The Coliseum was built as a no-frills facility with three decks, no roof, and great expanses of exposed gray concrete.
In October 1995, the Coliseum began an extensive renovation. The $120 million project included the addition of 22,000 new seats, 90 luxury suites, 2 private clubs and 2 state-of-the-art scoreboards.
Another renovation took place in 1996. This project involved the complete demolition and redesign of the building's interior: capacity was increased by more than 4,000 to a maximum of 19,200 plus 72 luxury suites and 3 exclusive clubs.
