Palo Alto is located in Santa Clara County 40 miles south of San Francisco between San Mateo and San Jose along Interstate 280 near the San Francisco Bay. Palo Alto is home to Stanford University and many technological companies.

The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 59,098, an increase of 3,198 since 1990. Palo Alto is part of the San Jose, California metro area.

Birthplace of the Personal Computer, the Homebrew Computer Club of Palo Alto reviewed Steven Wozniak's first contribution to the personal computer field, the Apple I, in April 1976, but few took it seriously. The Xerox PARC Center, (Developed the computer “Mouse” and the graphical desktop), IBM, and many other major American technology companies are either based in the area or have offices in the area.

All year Satellite Wagering, Waterworld USA, Paradise Island Fun Center and an RV Park are just a few of the features of the Cal Expo.The first State Fair was held in 1854 in San Francisco at the old Music Hall. The fair offered premiums (prizes) for its competitions and included such agricultural exhibits such as 2-inch-long peanuts, 72-pound beets and a 10-pound carrot that was longer than 3 feet. Horseracing was part of that first fair and has continued to be a part of the fair ever since.
