Point Sur State Historic Park contains an active Coast Guard Lightstation that sits 361 feet above the surf on a large volcanic rock. The facilities were established on August 1, 1889 and have been in continuous operation since then. Four lighthouse keepers and their families lived at the station until 1974 when the light station was automated. Point Sur has been a navigational landmark since its establishment. The buildings are being restored as a complete turn of the century lightstation.
Tours of the facility are available on weekends year around, and on Wednesday seasonally. The park is located 19 miles south of Carmel along Highway 1.
