Saddleback Butte State Park was originally established in the
Mojave Desert in 1960 to preserve its Joshua tree woodland. To the east of the forest rises the 3,751-foot Saddleback Butte. A key attraction is the self-guided Joshua Trail. Wildlife includes antelope, ground squirrels and small birds known as red-shafted flickers. Camping is for groups only.
The park is 17 miles east of Lancaster on Avenue J East.
