Salton Sea

Created by a flood on the Colorado River in 1905, the shallow Salton Sea is 35 miles long and 15 miles at its widest. Situated 20 miles south of Indio in the Imperial Valley, the area around the sea regularly reaches temperatures above 100 degrees in summer. It is most popular with recreation enthusiasts during the winter months.Long known as the best fishery in the state; the Salton Sea has rewarded anglers with corvina (a type of sea bass) as large as 37 pounds. A limit of five corvina is easily caught; with most of the fish weighing more than five pounds. Boat races have been held on the sea since 1929. The lake is known as the fastest in America due to its saltiness (which makes boats more buoyant and higher-riding) and the high atmospheric pressure, which increases the performance of engines.
