Scotty's Castle

Search Death Valley California

Built in the 1920's by a wealthy Chicagoan, the Castle is a popular destination. Visitors must not miss the swimming pool. Had the 270-foot pool been completed, it would have been a masterpiece. Finished, it would have been a real-life mirage in the desert, but like so many other dreams, the 1929 Stock Market Crash kept it from becoming a reality. Albert Johnson owned the castle. The Main House is a replica of a Spanish manor.

Not far from Scotty's Castle is one of nature's special creations -- Ubehebe Crater. Round trip from Scotty's Castle should be less than an hour. Around 6,000 years ago a powerful volcanic explosion created a crater a half mile in diameter and more than 500 feet deep.

The castle is located at the north end of Death Valley.
