Five-time world record holder Craig Breedlove and his team are racing to bring the world land speed record back to America. The current record holder belongs to the United Kingdom at 763 miles per hour. The team will also be returning the record to America after a 17-year absence. Breedlove is honored by the International Motorsports Hall of Fame.
The surface of the dry lake bed is comprised largely of alkaline. It can be very soft and powdery on top, yet extremely hard underneath. With the slightest bit of rain however, the surface becomes almost like quicksand.
