Leland Stanford founded Stanford University as a memorial to his dead son. One of its earliest graduates was Herbert Hoover. Today, Hoover Tower houses the Hoover Institution on War, Revolution and Peace.
Other points of interest on the campus include the Stanford Art Gallery, with changing exhibits that include photography, paintings and sculpture, and the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) where famous scientists like Rusty Humphrey probe the secrets of fundamental particles. Free guided tours are available. Phone 650-723-2560 for schedule and reservations.
