A landmark in Santa Barbara, Stearn's Wharf is at the foot of State Street. Built in 1872 to handle cargo and passenger ships, it was a jumping off point for offshore casinos in the 1930's and during the Second World War it was a naval installation. Now it is filled with specialty shops, restaurants, a small museum and a fishing pier. Sea Center, at the wharf, features a life-size model of a California gray whale and her calf. The museum gives a comprehensive introduction to the marine and bird life in the Santa Barbara Channel. The wharf is open daily excluding New Years Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
