The once rural community is now part of the
Greater Los Angeles, just north of San Fernando on Interstate 5. Sylmar is part of the
Los Angeles-Long Beach, California metro area.
Its name derives from Latin for "forest" and Spanish for "sea". It was the filming location for the 2002 movie, "Stealing Harvard" and 2001 movie, "Frailty".
