In 1856, Ukiah's first settler, Samuel Lowry, built a log cabin on the southwest corner of Perkins and Main Streets. Since then, many more settlers made their homes in the Ukiah Valley. With the northern Coastal Mountains as a backdrop, Ukiah is situated in the fertile Yokayo Valley. Surrounded by rich grape vineyards and pear orchards, Ukiah is just over an hour drive from the Mendocino Coast and the coastal redwoods.Ukiah is located near Mendocino Lake, which provides ample opportunity for outdoor recreation. Ukiah is also home to a challenging 18 hole, par 70 golf course situated along the western edge of Todd Grove Park and the southern edge of Low Gap Park. This course is well maintained and accessible year-round. Ukiah is located in Mendocino County (of which it is the county seat) north of Santa Rosa between Willits and Healdsburg along US Highway 101 on the banks of the Russian River near Clear Lake and the Pacific Ocean.
