The first known inhabitants of the Walnut Creek area were Bolbones Indians. In March 1772, the first Spanish explorers arrived to the region. Walnut Creek was first known as "The Corners" -- where the two roads leading from Martinez & San Jose and Oakland converge.
Early European residents planted many groves of walnut trees there. The town got its modern name from the creek that runs through the area and the groves of walnut trees. The walnut industry continued well into the 1960's but met its demise as the population grew. Now a thriving suburban hub surrounded by huge tracts of California Ranch Style homes, Walnut Creek, still a "Crossroads" is bound to be the urban center of the Diablo Valley.
