Central City pays tribute to its colorful western heritage with its preserved main street that harks back to the 1870s; the town is part of a National Historic District, and several tours of historic sites are offered. The surrounding countryside provides various recreation, such as camping, hiking, hunting, mountain biking and cross-country and downhill skiing.

The city is host to several summer festivals, including the Opera Festival which opened with Lillian Gish starring in "Camille" in 1932. Central City is located on Hwy 119.

Central City and the nearby community of Black Hawk are best known for their casinos.
