Cripple Creek

Cripple Creek is the seat of Teller County, named for a local creek thats banks were so steep that cows were known to break their legs trying to get water. The discovery of gold in the area in 1891 established the town, and by 1901 it was a major gold mining center with a population of about 50,000. Over $600 million in gold was discovered here - more than any other geologic deposit on earth. Today, it is a summer resort and tourist center. Local attractions include abandoned gold mines, two history museums, an old brothel, and the entire downtown historic district. Many of the town's former brothels and saloons have turned into casinos, and today, gambling is a major economic plus for the town. Cripple Creek is just west of Colorado Springs. Mueller State Park, Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument and Elevenmile Canyon Reservoir are all nearby.
