Surrounded by the mountains, forests, rivers and lakes of the central Rocky mountains and Gunn National Forest, Gunnison makes an excellent base for all outdoor activities. The largest man-made lake in the state, Blue Mesa, is located in Gunnison's Curecanti National Recreation Area, and offers an abundance of water sports including water skiing, sailboarding, canoeing, and fishing. Hundreds of miles of trails provide access to prmitive areas and high mountains for breathtaking views of the countryside. Visitors to Gunnison can also explore the nearby Black Canyon of the Gunnison Ntl Park on scenic rim drives. Many sightseeing tours of the area are also offered. Once a trade center for outlying ranching operations, Gunnison celebrates its western heritage during the city's Cattlemen's Days event in July.
