The county seat of Prowers County, Lamar is the site of one of twelve Madonna monuments, each in a different state, that mark old Hwy 50. A state welcome center is located in a renovated Santa Fe Railroad Depot next to the Madonna of the Trail monument. About two miles north of the chamber of commerce is a marker commemorating the location of the Santa Fe Trail. Lamar is located just west of the Kansas state line, on Hwy 50. The Arkansas River and Great Plains Reservoir are nearby. Birders from all over flock to Lamar for the spring migration of giant white snow geese.
