Piedra Falls is located in the San Juan Mountain Range. The East Fork shoots through a 6' wide slot at Piedra Falls and plunges 30' into a white and yellow cauldron of air and water. It makes a noise beyond the capability of hearing. The falls have a truly disorienting power. Several viewpoints offer something like shelter from the onslaught of water being thrown at you.

To reach the falls drive west on U.S. 160,to 631 and turn right and drive north. Stay on 631 across the bridge over the Piedra, about 20 miles from highway 160. Take forest road 636, which veers off to the right and prominent signs identify it as the Middle Fork Road. In another two miles, there's a sharp right turn onto forest road 637. Stay on 637 until it ends at a flat spot below Rock Mountain right at the edge of the East Fork of the Piedra. Then there is a short hike to the falls on a faint trail through the Aspen and Spruce to the bottom of the falls.
