Once a native shortgrass prairie habitat, the area has been modified by farming, ranching, military, and chemical manufacturing activities. The refuge's grasslands, water impoundment's and woodlands provide habitat for a wide variety of over 300 species of wildlife including 227 birds, 32 mammals, and 18 reptiles and amphibians. The Rocky Mountain Arsenal NWR is located in southwestern Adams County, adjacent (east) to Commerce City and 10 miles northeast of Denver. The refuge is composed of open grassland and riparian habitats. The entire site is currently a Superfund site controlled by the U.S. Army.
