Downtown Salida received its listing in the National Register of Historic Places in July, 1984. In making the nomination on March 16 that year, members of the Colorado Historic Preservation Review Board commented that "Downtown Salida has the finest collection of historically significant buildings in the state." The purpose of this self-guided tour is to expand on the histories of these wonderful 100-year-old buildings. Descriptions of their architecture, as well as stories about some of the people who built, worked and lived downtown are related. The tour includes descriptions of some 78 buildings. Several "ghost" buildings, structures that for whatever reason have been removed over the years, are included. Buildings are referred to by their proper name, if they have one, such as the Twitchell or Sandusky building, or buildings with a dominant occupant such as the Unique Theater; other structures are titled by address.
