Connecticut's First Company Governor's Horse Guards performs weekly mounted drills on its grounds in Avon throughout the year. In formations taken from early U.S. Cavalry manuals.
This event, first chartered in 1788, was made up of many veterans of the War of Independence. They banded together to make the Governor's Independent Volunteer Troop of Horse Guards and served as escorts to many important visitors to Connecticut's capital.
The Horse Guard has served as escorts to Governors, Presidents, military heroes and other dignitaries including George Washington, James Monroe, Andrew Jackson, Commodore Thomas McDonough, and Lafayette.
